Orientation-Controlled Anisotropy in Single Crystals of Quasi-1D BaTiS<sub>3</sub>

Low-dimensional materials with chain-like (one-dimensional) or layered (two-dimensional) structures are of significant interest due to their anisotropic electrical, optical, and thermal properties. One material a structure, BaTiS3 (BTS), was recently shown possess giant in-plane optical anisotropy glass-like conductivity. To understand the origin these effects, it is necessary fully characterize thermal, electronic BTS. this end, BTS crystals different orientations (a- c-axis orientations) were grown by chemical vapor transport. X-ray absorption spectroscopy used local structure Fourier transform infrared reflection/transmission spectra show large in a-oriented crystals, while oriented nearly isotropic in-plane. platelet promising uniaxial for optics optic axis parallel c-axis. The conductivity measurements revealed ∼4.5 between c- a-axis. Time-domain Brillouin scattering showed that longitudinal sound speed along two axes same, suggesting result phonon rates.
